I agree about the IDE part. Just because you can use some little editor that
does some syntax highlighting for you, doesn't make it great and doesn't
make it an IDE.
I use Visual Studio for most of my development. I am a C++ programmer and by
choice, I use VC++. I'm sorry, but "vi" doesn't cut it for me when writing
C++ code. I do use vi at times, but I much prefer an IDE. I have got an IDE
under X-windows on SCO called SNIFF, but when you compare that to VC++, VC++
wins hands down. All my code runs under Unix, so I always write
non-specific, portable code. Just because I use VC++ doesn't mean I can't
write plain C++ code.
Now, when it comes to web development, I use Visual Interdev. I used it at a
previous work where we did ASP pages and VB development. It worked well for
ASP as it has a debugger included. Now for my PHP pages, I can't debug the
PHP pages, so it's only providing some syntax highlighting for me for
general html functions, not php stuff.
That's my 2c and it's MY opinion, so it's not right or wrong. Just what I
think.
