This is a good example of where I would have hoped for the developers to cooperate with the developer instead. Alot of what these packages do overlaps with DataObjects. Of course they are different in some ways. But these differences could have been merged into DataObjects. Instead the developer chose to push their implementation.
Yes, I don't see DataObjects integrating these changes. This brings me
Because neither the DB_Table nor the DB_OO developer cared to go that route. However Alan is working on his own to fix some of those gaps. Quite a pity that those developers choose to not cooperate.
to another point, though; a lot of the competition would be removed if there was less ego on PEAR. Another way of putting this is that anyone who is a developer on a project should be allowed to commit changes to that project. This is also related to the bugfix issue.... why can't anyone who is granted developer status on a project fix bugs on that project!? I highly encourage anyone working on my projects to fix bugs. They don't need to "ask me permission" to fix documented bugs; this is ludicrous. Obviously the direction of a project needs a manager, but it doesn't need a micro-manager.
Ok the ego thing seems to be a common theme. I dont see this abuse of power really. But if I would I would have acted already. The reason we dont allow bug fixing is that the lead maintainer has a better understanding of things and sometimes these fixes break other things, dont fit into the long term strategy. Especially since we dont expect developer to constantly monitor developments these kinds of commits might go by unnoticed by the maintainer and create issues in themselves. Therefore with the QA team we are going a different route. However any maintainer is of course free to grant write access to his package if he wants to. regards, Lukas Smith smith@backendmedia.com _______________________________ BackendMedia www.backendmedia.com berlin@backendmedia.com Linn Zwoch Smith GbR Pariser Str. 44 D-10707 Berlin Tel +49 30 83 22 50 00 Fax +49 30 83 22 50 07
