You could gather usage data from the pear installer 'calling home'. I didn't propose this, because it is skewed. Users will most probably pick the officially sanctioned package, and only in severe situations you could detect a mass of people jumping ship to another package. The same applies to user opinions, with the extra skew that minorities tend to be more vocal than majorities.
Of course, those of us that don't use the PEAR installer won't be counted. ;-)
